SC
State Historical Records Advisory Board (SC SHRAB)
Over fifty individuals from across the Palmetto State participated in a
conference to assess progress thus far on the
SC SHRAB’s
state plan for historical records, 2007-2012, and to identify strategies and
action needed in the near future. Considering the economic downturn in South
Carolina and nationally, the Board wanted input and commitment from key South
Carolinia archival and information professionals on how best to address the many
challenges to preserving and making accessible the State’s historical records.
The daylong conference included presentations by representatives from Georgia
and North Carolina on how they are addressing similar challenges, and concurrent
breakout sessions on key SC SHRAB state plan issues: Archival Education and
Training, Digital Access to Collections, and Collaboration and Advocacy. A
wrap-up plenary session included presentation and discussion of results from the
breakout sessions.
Funding for the conference was provided by a grant from the National Historical
Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC),
the grant-making branch of the National Archives and Records Administration.
The SC SHRAB will use the recommendations from the breakout sessions in ongoing
planning, in its facilitation of cooperation among repositories and
organizations, and to better inform its grants activities.
