SC SHRAB 2010 Training Sessions

"Basics of Archives: An Overview of Arrangement and Description”

Instructor: Jeanette Bergeron, Archivist

This full-day workshop will combine lectures and hands-on exercises to teach participants how to arrange, describe and store a variety of papers and other records. The lecture portions will be based on the nationally recognized “Basics of Archives” training program and the instructor’s own “Manual for South Carolina archives and recordkeeping.” The class will work with traditional paper documents (correspondence, minutes, reports, email, diaries and journals, financial records), floppy disks, scrapbooks, as well as image materials (photographs, negatives, CDs, blueprints). The course will specifically address appraisal, types of records value (historical, legal, archival, financial), arrangement options, provenance, original order, determination of records classes (as well as fonds and series), various types of description and their chief elements (DACS, MARC, EAD, finding aids, inventories), and the new concepts of minimal processing to bring collections to users faster.

One class is scheduled for 2010:
